During a recent trip to Napa Valley, I had the pleasure of staying at one of the region’s most famed resorts – The Solage. Best known for its world renown spa facility with sensational offerings set on the outskirts of historic Calistoga, I couldn’t wait to sit back and relax at a California oasis. This property boasts 89 suites and studios scattered across 22 acres of beautifully landscaped property within minutes to some of the world’s most notable vineyards and wine country landmark. Days begin here with farm to table breakfast delights, a light sweat at yoga class, followed by endless possibilities for activity in this perfectly located vacation destination. Featuring a world class spa (ranked top 5 in the world by Conde Naste Traveler), you can unwind at sunset in the mineral pools after treating yourself to the volcanic mud scrub. Today’s insider feature on Ladyhattan, gives you a sneak-peak at the very best of The Solage through the eyes of a lady. Specific details on the best times to go, pricing and additional travel tips to this region of Napa Valley can be found at the bottom of this post in TRAVEL TIPS.
Let’s start with the most important meal of the day, breakfast, where you can enjoy house-made treats and an organic farm-to-table menu. In a beautiful vaulted barn-like space, a fresh California breakfast is served. Here I enjoyed daily squeezed juices such as grapefruit and orange with some cinnamon sugar donut holes cooked to order – yes, ladies, served nice and hot! You can’t go wrong with any of the egg dishes, particularly the Mount Washington eggs, the most popular item on the menu. Make sure to get a homemade English muffin as your side, another raved about item. My sweet tooth lead me to order the tasty lemon-ricotta pancakes drenched with blueberry syrup and toasted pinenuts. Doesn’t your mouth just water with the words lemon-ricotta? See my Ladyhattan photograph of these tasty cakes below and find a complete breakfast menu to make you uber hungry here.
From breakfast, head over to the spa and fitness facilities for some health, wellness and relaxation. Daily yoga and cardio classes are offered to guests who want to earn their pancakes and wine.
After reading numerous articles about the resort’s spa facilities raved about by Travel & Leisure, I was anxious to see why a “deep tissue massage” at this joint was superior to other spa services around the world. Let’s find out.
At the spa, an inviting space of plush white linen couches and open-air fireplaces awaited me. After being politely escorted through the changing room space, I waited patiently in the spa relaxation room for my service. With plenty of juicy gossip magazines on site, I relaxed and enjoyed this quiet time by flipping through pictures and relishing in the excitement of the massage waiting for me. The spa also offers delicious pool-side dining, including fresh California fish tacos which I enjoyed for lunch (photographed below for your food porn pleasure).
When my massage therapist took me to the private room, I was impressed to see such a refined and polished set-up which included a private washroom, sink and even soaking tub. After undressing and placing my face down in the donut cushion, I can’t report on much else here. Sorry travel enthusiasts. This lady dozed off to an ecstasy of dreams as the masseuse stroked muscles in my body that I did not know even existed. Refreshed is an understatement. I left my service feeling invigorated, loose and relaxed in both body and mind. Coming from a lady on the corporate grind in New York City, I would call this a miracle.
But wait, it gets better. From the service, I was then brought to a “ladies only” amenities space where one can indulge in a hot mineral water soaking pool, a cold plunge and steam – all clothing optional. There are lounge chairs surrounding the hot mineral water pool for you to take a nap, catch up on some reading, or sip a cocktail of choice. I did it all, and I did it all au naturel. From the sweltering steam, to the icy plunge and to the Jacuzzi, I could have spent all day there – and you can… as a guest of The Solage. From the spa, take a leisurely walk back to your private cottage. Chic studio rooms and suites are set in wooden cottages and come with vaulted ceilings and minibars, plus flat-screen TVs, iPod docks and high-speed internet. Resort bicycles are also provided right outside the cottage for each guest. Some quarters even feature fireplaces, patios and outdoor hot tubs – my oh my – this sounds too good to be true, right? Go see it for yourself.
Often times I find myself always “on the go” even while technically on vacation. The Solage makes it extra easy for you to push the stop button, relax and unwind from your typical grind. I could not recommend this resort enough for my fellow New Yorkers, who I know firsthand are the type of vacationers that struggle most to unplug. Yes, Yankees, I’m talking to you – get off your work phone. Inside your guest cottage you can enjoy a private environment in the heart of California’s purest land. Take out your favorite book, uncork a bottle of local wine and soak up the tranquility of your private covered patio. The Solage makes vacationing easy.
